wEEn - Where'd the Cheese Go (parts 1 and 2)

 <itunes:subtitle>Unused Pizza Hut jingles</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary> Of the supposed 6 completed jingles written for Pizza Hut, I have two. Here, they're combined into one file for your listening pleasure. From Deaner:Earlier in 2002 we were hired by the largest advertising firm in the country to write music for a Pizza Hut commercial. Pizza Hut had hired them to come up with a whole new image to promote their new Pizza, 'The Insider' which had all the cheese inside the crust. In keeping in line with their new cutting edge image, the agency hired Ween to do the music, and we delivered in a big way. Unfortunately, they didn't like a single piece of the 6 tunes we submitted and they had us rewriting the song every day for a couple of weeks before they hired someone else. In my opinion, it is one of the best tunes we wrote all last year. </itunes:summary>

Black Lips - Veni Vidi Vici

<itunes:subtitle>From 'Good Bad Not Evil' (2007)</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary> This is a drift through the desert that sees Black Lips emerge spaced out but cocksure enough to charm a rattlesnake of a song from the sandstorm, hypnotising with a rhythm that, despite the heat, barely breaks into a sweat. Adding a liberal dose of cosmic fairy dust to a swaggering chorus that recounts the immortal words of Julius Caesar himself: 'Veni, Vidi, Vici' (which, for those who went to a school without the practical foresight to teach Latin, they helpfully translate as 'We came, we saw, we conquered all'). A healthy whiff of arrogance fills the air and proves that this band more than any other manage to recreate the true sound and attitude of Sixties garage. It may contain little of the raucous energy and adrenaline of their live shows but it's an intoxicating mash up nevertheless, and one with a strong message - psych-blues with an anti-war sting in the tail.
Floor - Figbender

 <itunes:subtitle>From the 'Loanin/Figbender' 7"</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary> Ah, the joy of the iPod shuffling through 23K songs... I end up hitting on things I would never have chosen on purpose, which is exactly why I dig it. When I had the 4gb mini, I hated the idea of shuffling. See, I've grown as a person. This morning, I got hit with Iron Maiden when I least expected it, and was transported back to 1983. That got me thinking about metal, and I've been trying to figure out when it was that I got into it. I'm pretty sure the first 'metal' stuff I bought was the first Black Sabbath record, then I started building off of that... Judas Priest, Maiden, etc. My friends were into Motley Crue and stuff like that, but I couldn't get behind it at all. I'd started buying punk rock records at the same time, but it wasn't for another few years that the punk rock stuff I was liking more and more was the metal-ish stuff: DRI, COC, Cro-Mags, The Accused, Suicidal Tendencies, Agnostic Front. By that time, I'd given up on metal now that I'd found the marriage of itand punk rock via was what termed the 'Crossover' movement. The people at the shows at the VFW hall in New Orleans at that time were a mix of dirty punks, metalheads, hippies, art fags, and, of course (and unfortunately), skinheads. There was this one skinhead-ish kid (suspenders, jack boots, etc) who we dubbed the 'Mad Mosher' because of the way he danced. He would semi-spastically walk around the outside of the pit flailing his arms in a punchy sort of way (think Ian Curtis). He often was wearing Metallica or Slayer t-shirts, both bands that I knew nothing of, and since I was done with metal at that point, I had no interest in discovery. Luckily, one of my friends wasn't so closed-minded as I was, and bought Slayer's 'Reign In Blood' record. I remember showing up at his house to play music one day and him telling us to come in the house first to listen to something. He put the record on and we were all like, 'Wha?' Sure the lyrics were ridiculous, and the music really wasn'tthat different from some of the stuff we'd been listening to, but the execution of it, coming from metal to hardcore punk instead of the other way around, was new to us. We then got to Anthrax (although we all agreed that Joey Belladonna was seriously a weak link), SOD, and finally Metallica's 'Master of Puppets' record. I have grown to hate Metallica, but I have to admit that the Puppets record was a turning point for me of sorts as far as my guitar playing (which had its good and bad points). Since then, there haven't been very many metal records that grabbed me in the same way, but every once in a while, I'll come across something interesting (Neurosis, Zeni Geva, Entombed, Disfear, Kyuss, Boris, The Austerity Program, Torche). So today, we here at Venus Bars (RIP) bring you 'Figbender' by Floor. I'm sure you all remember Floor, right? Well two of these dudes are now in Torche. Floor used to play pretty regularly at the Hardback. These dudes loved feedback, and were not adverse to riding a riff into the sunset, unrelenting until dawn, and for that, I loved them. </itunes:summary>

Television Personalities - I Know Where Syd Barrett Lives

 <itunes:subtitle>From '... and don't the kids just love it'</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary> I've never been a Pink Floyd fan. I have an ex brother-in-law who was. His name was Mark. His family owned a chain of these weirdly medieval-styled hamburger restaurants called 'The Ground Pati' where your drinks were served in pewter mugs. I hated that, but they did have good burgers. I was the only person in our family that didn't seem to hate him. This was largely due to the fact that he'd married my oldest sister, who's bordering on bat-shit crazy, so everyone assumed this dude had to be pretty fucked up. When I was in my early teens and really getting hungry for music outside the mainstream, he and I would talk about what we were listening to. The first time I heard Syd Barrett's name was from him going on about the history of Pink Floyd, telling me that Syd had gone crazy from taking too many psychedelics, and was now in an institution running around its green fields chasing butterflies. I got hip to Television Personalities a couple of years ago from a 'best albums of the 80s' list. Even if this song wasn't about Syd Barrett, the sounds would have still reminded me of that story. </itunes:summary>

Negativland - Dead Dog Records Part Four: Gimme The Mermaid

<itunes:subtitle>'Go get a lawyer, cuz your gonna need one.'</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary> After the U2/Island Records/Kasey Kasem/SST Records/Greg Ginn debacle (for a quick summary see this), Negativland put out a magazine called 'The Letter U And The Numeral 2' documenting the entire thing, including faxes, press releases, interviews, and court documents. The magazine was eventually included in a book, 'Fair Use: The Story of the Letter U and the Numeral 2', containing updated information as far as the legal bits, and a ten track cd. This track is my favorite from the cd. You've got an irate lawyer, the Little Mermaid wanting 'moooooore', Negativland covering Black Flag's 'Gimme Gimme Gimme' (a nice little 'fuck you' to Greg Ginn), and a Marky Mark sample (who sampled Negativland without their permission, not that they give a shit, they're just sayin'). </itunes:summary>

Hot Handed God of Cops - Rock the Casbah

 <itunes:subtitle>From the Dictionaraoke project.</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary> Several years ago, I was subscribed to a mailing list that was an off-shoot from Negativland's website (it was called 'Snuggles', a nod to the infamous 'U2' record). One day, it was brought to our attention that both the Webster and Encarta online dictionaries now had sound samples of the words, and someone figured out how to get to the raw samples themselves. Within a few hours, we had a full fledged project put together. The idea was to get crappy midi versions of popular songs, and use the dictionary samples to create the lyrics. Thus, Dictionaraoke was born. My personal contributions, under the moniker 'Hot Handed God of Cops', were 'Blitzkrieg Bop', and 'Rock the Casbah'. I did Beck's 'Loser' too, but when they decided to cap the number of songs at 100, I didn't want to take up three spots. Don't know if I still have that one. So if you're interested in listening to a bunch of geeks play with bad midi files and vocal samples, check out http://www.dictionaraoke.org/. It's still up and running. My personal favorites were Stark Effect's take on 'Green Eggs and Ham', and m-slick da ninja's version of 'My Heart Will Go On'. </itunes:summary>
